Thoroughbred – nine months old – Biography written by Linda Shantz:
I have only owned Gracie since she was a three-year-old, but I was there the day she was conceived, and was the one to welcome her into this world on Valentine’s Day in 2008. She was a tiny, gregarious filly who won the hearts of everyone who met her – including the staff at OVC, where she spent five days at a mere two and a half days of age.
She was injured in a pasture accident as a weanling, and while she was in training at Woodbine as a two and three-year old, the decision was made not to pursue further training because of lingering weakness from that injury. When her trainer informed me that she had recommended to the owner/breeder that we find Gracie a home, well, I couldn’t help but step up!
Less than four months after I bought her for the magic figure of one dollar, Gracie became very ill, and once again I found myself taking her to OVC to the new isolation unit. Eleven stress-filled days and many thousands of dollars later, I brought her back home. They never really found out why she was so sick, but she has been healthy since.
It wasn’t until almost a year after that, that I started riding her. Some days I think in three years we should be further along in our training, but when I think of that sick little foal, or that injured weanling, or that three-year old in isolation at OVC, I decide we’ve come a long, long way.
